カラブリア、あるいはバジリカータ周辺の民陶と見られる、水やワインを携えるためのボトルです。
畑仕事や移動の際に持ち歩くための、実用的な水筒だったと考えられます。
多孔質な素焼きの胴は、中の水分をわずかに外へ通し、蒸発の際に生じる気化熱によって、内部の液体をひんやりと保つ役割を果たしたと考えられます。
地中海地域の乾いた暑さに応える、素朴で理にかなったつくりです。
ねじりを加えた持ち手には、実用本位の器形の中にもささやかな装飾性が感じられます。
手で削られた小さな木栓の素朴な表情も、この器の佇まいによく馴染んでいます。
