HEATHER WAFFLE is a cotton and linen Japanese Imabari waffle towel by Kontex, woven in Ehime, Japan from 70% cotton and 30% linen, in four sizes from 38 × 40 cm / 15 × 15.7 in to 80 × 140 cm / 31.5 × 55.1 in. Light and quick to dry, with a soft dry touch, for bath, hand, face, kitchen, travel and gym use. Four colours.

Linen stays stiff until it has been used for some time, so it is blended with cotton here to be soft from the first wash rather than the twentieth. Linen is also held to be the most absorbent and fastest-drying of the natural fibres, and at 30% it gives the cloth a dry, cool finish: patting lightly is enough to take the water up, and lifting the water away quickly means less of the chill that follows staying damp.

The waffle stands the yarn up into cells, which puts far more of it in the moving air; hung up, it dries before laundry left indoors has a chance to turn. Every size carries a hanging loop, so it can go straight onto a hook by the basin or the cooker. The four colours are muted heathered tones, meant to sit quietly on a rail rather than announce themselves.

Low-speed looms

Woven in Imabari on traditional low-speed looms, from more than 150 yarn blends Kontex develops in house. Weaving slowly keeps tension off the yarn, so the fibres hold their natural loft.

Soft water finish

Finished with the pure soft water of Imabari's local river systems, the water the region's gentle dyeing and washing is known for. It is what gives the towels their absorbency.

Cotton and linen

The 70% cotton and 30% linen blend pairs cotton's soft absorbency with linen's crisp, quick-drying texture.

Kontex

Founded in 1934 in Imabari, Ehime (Japan's most celebrated towel-making region), Kontex has spent nearly a century perfecting the craft of the towel. Each piece is woven on traditional low-speed looms using over 150 custom-developed yarn blends, then washed with pure soft water drawn from local river systems. The result is a towel of exceptional absorbency, rapid drying, and enduring quality, crafted with care for both the user and the environment.
