Antieke Calabrische pot

A food storage vessel believed to have been made in or around Calabria, Southern Italy.

Similar forms can often be found in Grottaglie, yet vessels of this kind were produced and used throughout Southern Italy, including Calabria and Basilicata, as part of everyday life.

With its reddish-brown clay body, traces of honey-coloured glaze remaining on the interior, and simple, utilitarian form, this piece appears to belong to the folk pottery tradition of the Calabria region.

Even among storage vessels of similar shape, the colour of the clay and the character of the glaze differ subtly from one region to another. In each piece, one can sense a distinct landscape shaped by the local climate, soil, and way of life.
