BRERA is a Japanese Imabari waffle towel by Kontex, woven in Ehime, Japan from 100% cotton, in four sizes from a 36 × 36 cm / 14.2 × 14.2 in hand towel to an 80 × 140 cm / 31.5 × 55.1 in bath sheet. Soft, absorbent waffle with a crisp wipe, for bath, hand, face and everyday use. Four colours.

The colour is built by layering several shades of cotton in the yarn rather than dyeing the finished cloth, which gives each shade a depth a flat dye cannot. The waffle cells are large — the largest of any Kontex weave — so only a small part of the cloth meets the skin. It stays dry to the touch when wet and wipes with the crispness of linen, though it is entirely cotton.

A waffle this deep takes a great deal of yarn, and the finishing wash is done thoroughly, so it takes up water properly from the day it arrives. The open structure also holds more surface against the air, and it dries faster than a towel with pile on both faces. With washing the weave draws tighter and the cells stand out more rather than flattening. L is cut a little compact for a bath towel and travels well to the gym; XL sits over the back of a sofa as a small blanket.

Low-speed looms

Woven in Imabari on traditional low-speed looms, from more than 150 yarn blends Kontex develops in house. Weaving slowly keeps tension off the yarn, so the fibres hold their natural loft.

Soft water finish

Finished with the pure soft water of Imabari's local river systems, the water the region's gentle dyeing and washing is known for. It is what gives the towels their absorbency.

Kontex

Founded in 1934 in Imabari, Ehime (Japan's most celebrated towel-making region), Kontex has spent nearly a century perfecting the craft of the towel. Each piece is woven on traditional low-speed looms using over 150 custom-developed yarn blends, then washed with pure soft water drawn from local river systems. The result is a towel of exceptional absorbency, rapid drying, and enduring quality, crafted with care for both the user and the environment.
