Plaster Circular Relief after Antoine Vechte
ambiantA circular plaster relief found in Italy.
The imagery is believed to be based on The Battle of the Amazons by the 19th-century French metalworker Antoine Vechte.
Around the central medallion, mounted figures and warriors are rendered in low relief, while the outer border is encircled by finely detailed arabesque ornament.
The composition is known originally as a metal decorative dish, and this piece appears to be a later plaster cast made as a wall decoration.
The dry white texture of the plaster, together with chips along the rim and surface wear, gives it a strong presence as a wall-mounted object.
