Details
Washi Cotton Kitchen Cloth is a Japanese Imabari kitchen cloth by Kontex, woven in Ehime, Japan from 70% cotton and 30% washi — Japanese paper yarn — in a single 50 × 70 cm / 19.7 × 27.6 in size, for drying dishes, wiping hands and cooking. Three colours.
Washi is paper spun into yarn, and it takes up far more water than its weight suggests: the maker’s own measure is that one cloth will absorb the water from twenty drinking glasses and still have room left. It does not go slack and sodden as it works, so the last glass comes out as clear as the first, without streaks.
At 50 × 70 cm it is large enough to wrap a mixing bowl or a pan rather than dab at one, which suits a kitchen that produces a lot of washing-up. Hung on a hook afterwards it dries on its own before the next meal — the paper yarn sheds water quickly — so it does not sit damp on the rail. The cloth is left in its natural greige, with the border colour as the only mark on it.

Founded in 1934 in Imabari, Ehime (Japan's most celebrated towel-making region), Kontex has spent nearly a century perfecting the craft of the towel. Each piece is woven on traditional low-speed looms using over 150 custom-developed yarn blends, then washed with pure soft water drawn from local river systems. The result is a towel of exceptional absorbency, rapid drying, and enduring quality, crafted with care for both the user and the environment.
